Millions 'to face fuel poverty' The number of people struggling to heat their homes is set to increase as energy prices rise, two reports warn
Alan Tattersall, director of home services at leading independent comparison and switching service uSwitch.com, comments: “The report’s conclusions are worrying reading for consumers already hard hit by increases to their energy bills of almost 20%* last year”. Tattersall continues: “We estimate gas and electricity prices will increase by 10% and 7%** respectively in 2005, which will add around £60 to the average consumer’s annual bill. However if we see a similar cold snap next winter to the one we experienced recently, then prices could rise at the same level as in 2004 when some customers saw increases of nearly £150***.” “The report blames a number of market inefficiencies for recent high prices. However the report fails to offer constructive recommendations as to how the trend in spiraling prices can be stopped.” “It seems like, yet again, it is up to consumers alone to ensure that they mitigate these rising costs by shopping around to get the best deal for their gas and electricity. By doing so, customers can save up to £170**** a year on their bills.” Nearly half of all British households have not switched away yet, forgoing nearly £2 billion worth of savings. The TiSC’s report illustrates that, against the backdrop of rising gas and electricity prices, consumers cannot afford to remain complacent.”
